Commemorating 10 Years in a Wheelchair (Paralysis Life Lessons)

On this day, February 5, I commemorate 10 years since my snowboarding accident. I just wanted to share a few thoughts in hopes that they will help you. Needless to say, there is always a feeling of bittersweetness in reflecting on my life since. There are many challenges that come with the inability to use my legs both physically and emotionally--the obvious no longer walking on my own two feet, physical struggle of picking up crying babies off the floor with risk of falling, traveling to inaccessible places, and waking up with physical pain each day among many others. And a sadness of loss of how life was before and frustration of figuring out life in a wheelchair.

However, the challenges of being in a wheelchair came with a discovery of immense strength that was hidden inside me, ready to be put to the test. And I believe each and every one of us has this strength inside of us. We've just got to keep digging to find it, telling ourselves that we can do it. That no matter what hard things come, we will keep on fighting the good fight because it is so worthwhile. Among the bitter, there is so much more sweet to be found. Exercising faith for good things to come, seeking out gratitude, and discovering a new happy for myself each day all have brought so much peace into my life.

Most importantly, as I look deeply at my life, I am overcome with gratitude for all the great and small things to be happy about in life. Although there are many things I am no longer able to do, there are even more things I can still do or have found different ways of doing. And for those things, I am so grateful. I am grateful that there is a God who knows me and loves me. He knows all things and gives me immense strength and love to go through my trials. He sends me little angels to guide my way through life. I am grateful for the gospel of Jesus Christ which gives me an understanding of my purpose here and reminds me that it is faith that makes life such a thrilling adventure. I am grateful for the knowledge that I am a daughter of God. I am equipped divine capabilities. I am worthy of love and kindness. I am an intelligent individual and I can contribute. I can do great things. I can make a difference in someone else's life. The possibilities of true happiness for me and all of you are endless.

I am grateful for family and friends who laugh with me as I’m trying to figure out this wheelchair thing. People willing to sit with me front row Joe’d at the movie theater because there’s crappy wheelchair seating. People who carry me literally and figuratively when I am weak. People who really believe that I can do anything. I’m grateful my sweet husband whose optimism and zest for life fuels me and turns my dreams into a reality. I’m grateful for my children who are so patient with me. I am grateful for the little things (like skiing and sweet notes) that brighten my day. As I look at all around me, I am reminded that this is truly a wonderful life.

Happy 10 year anniversary.
